NDT Basic Level III Preparation Course

Level III is the most senior NDT qualification — the level at which an inspector takes full technical responsibility: selecting methods, writing and validating procedures, interpreting codes and standards, and directing Level I and II personnel. The route to it begins with the Basic examination.

Under EN ISO 9712, Level III certification is made up of two parts: the Basic exam, which is common to all methods, and one or more Main Method exams specific to the technique you certify in (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET). The Basic exam is taken once, remains valid for five years, and is credited toward every method exam you go on to sit. ITNOG’s Basic Level III Preparation Course is designed to get experienced inspectors ready for that exam.

What the Basic exam covers

The Basic examination tests the broad technical knowledge a Level III is expected to hold beyond any single method:

  • Product and material technology — materials, castings, forgings, wrought products, welding, and heat treatment, and the discontinuities associated with each
  • The certification scheme — the requirements of EN ISO 9712 and the responsibilities of a Level III
  • General knowledge of NDT methods — the principles of the main NDT methods at Level II, including at least one volumetric method (UT or RT)

What the preparation course provides

Our course consolidates and revises this body of knowledge, helping candidates:

  • Strengthen their understanding of materials, fabrication processes, and product technology
  • Review the principles and capabilities of the major NDT methods
  • Become familiar with the certification scheme and the duties of a Level III
  • Practise with representative questions to build exam readiness

After completing the Basic exam, candidates pursue their chosen Main Method exam(s) to qualify for full Level III certification.

Prerequisites

The Basic Level III preparation course is intended for experienced NDT professionals — typically those already holding EN ISO 9712 Level II certification in the relevant method. While ISO 9712 does not mandate that Level II be held before sitting Level III, doing so significantly reduces the training requirements and is strongly recommended.

Candidates must also meet the standard vision requirements: near-vision acuity (Jaeger Number 1 or equivalent at not less than 30 cm) and adequate colour perception, verified within the last 12 months.

Exact training-hour and experience requirements depend on your existing qualifications. Our training team will confirm what applies to you before enrolment.

Who should attend

This course suits experienced Level II inspectors, NDT engineers, and quality professionals aiming to take on senior technical responsibility — writing procedures, directing NDT operations, and managing inspection across oil & gas, power, wind, battery, and manufacturing projects.
